Calling on Christ is the only way to be saved. Paul is still addressing the rejection of Christ by so many of his Jewish kinsmen. Here he traces the steps that lead to calling on Christ. His purpose is to show that the reason Israel has not is not because some step was missing. All the necessary conditions were met. Israel had full opportunity to call on Christ and are therefore without excuse. Here, all attempts to dismiss Israel’s culpability are refuted and the universal case for believing the word of Christ signaled.
