Bearing the Blame

Let There Be Darkness

This dark scene depicts the central scandal of the gospel. It is a record of events that tells more than history. Grave irony saturates all that is seen. The Just suffers injustice. Responsibility is evaded and blame is shifted. The Righteous One is condemned. The wicked is set free. Here the power of God and the wisdom of God conspire to put on display outrageous—even offensive—grace in a living parable. At each turn, it is about bearing the blame—prefiguring “the word of the cross.”
