Numbers

The fourth book of the Torah recounts Israel in the wilderness. While the census renders numbers that testify to the great faithfulness, power, and sovereign ability of God to fulfill His promises (see Genesis 12:2; 15:5; 17:2), the predominate theme of the book deals with Israel suffering the consequences of her failure to trust God through His word. Her refusal to enter into the promised land demonstrated her disbelief, placing greater trust in what they saw with their eyes and what they felt with their feelings. Numbers is an important part of the Torah designed to remind and warn that failure to trust and obey God in faith invites God’s discipline but will not frustrate His ultimate purpose.
