Gospel-Righteousness

In a brilliant economy of words, Paul presents his thesis for Romans. The first half depicts the gospel as the power of God for salvation, forming the immediate reason Paul is not ashamed of it (1:16). The second half explains why the gospel is the power of God for salvation (1:17). Here, we are confronted with “the text” that sparked the Protestant Reformation. Here, we encounter the essential kernel of this greatest of all letters. Here, the central mystery of the gospel is introduced. Here, we are met with gospel-righteousness—a profound and powerful revelation that exalts Christ.
