Small Beginnings: The Parables of the Mustard Seed and Leaven

Parables: Secrets of the Kingdom

Jesus gives two more parables to the crowds of unbelieving Israel, revealing and concealing hidden truths of the long-awaited kingdom of God. These parables are short but important. Opulent grandeur was Israel’s expectation. Instantaneous glory of a magnificent kingdom is what they were looking for from the Messiah. But they did not know the secret of the kingdom. The kingdom will begin in an unexpectedly, even contemptibly, small manner but nevertheless will grow pervasively large. From seemingly inglorious insignificance to spectacular fulfillment is like the kingdom of heaven. It will have an imperceptibly small beginning and will not be fully revealed until the end.
