Christ’s Sabbath Work
Before the face of those who deserve judgment, Jesus gives grace (11:20-24). He calls people to Himself for Sabbath rest (11:28). He desires mercy (12:7). Dogmatic misunderstanding and misapplication of the Sabbath is then dramatically contrasted to Jesus’ invitation for rest. The otherwise outrageous claim that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath punctuates the contrast. Now, we move from words to works. Those who pride themselves in their obedience to law seek to accuse Jesus. Sabbath is the occasion. Healing is the provocation. Shadows and symbols give way to substance. Christ demonstrates that He is the Lord of the Sabbath, working what only God can work to provide the restoration that only God can provide. Rich irony crowns the scene. By His “work” on the Sabbath, Christ’s Sabbath “work” is set in motion for ultimate restoration and rest.
