Secrets of the Kingdom
Active emphasis has been on Israel’s proud imperceptivity. Emphasis now turns to Jesus’ formal response. He withdraws His light from their darkness. Far from making it easier for them to understand His greatness, He veils His value. He hands out puzzle pieces in parables. And this is the genius of Jesus’ method: He conceals as He reveals. Revelation is now given in riddles, and only the grace of God can account for understanding. Those who love darkness will be left in the dark. Thus, the parables reveal the hearts of the hearers. The King and His kingdom are advancing, but only as a secret.
