Glorifying God in a Hostile World

In section one of his first epistle (1:1-2:10), Peter wrote to exiled and persecuted believers of truths and responsibilities of their faith in Christ. He addressed the great joy of their salvation, that they were saved to be holy, to put away all malice toward one another, and to love their fellow believers earnestly from pure hearts. Like newborn infants they were to desire the pure spiritual milk of the word, and as living stones they were to be built up in Christ, who is a cornerstone chosen and precious, for the purpose of offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Having established these truths as a basis for holy living before God and in relationship with other Christians, in the next section Peter begins addressing how believers are to properly behave before and interact with an unbelieving, hostile, and watching world, to bring glory to God.
