Discerning the Majesty

Messiah and majesty—inseparable concepts in the mind of the expectant Hebrew. But Jesus has yet to reveal Himself to Israel in full messianic splendor. Instead, He has just pronounced a series of woes against Israel’s leaders, wept over Jerusalem, and announced the destruction of its temple. His disciples ask when such judgment will come upon Jerusalem and what will be the sign of His kingly presence in manifest majesty. A robust warning against deception frames Jesus’ response—it is key to discerning His majesty. They do not yet grasp the cross or Christ’s departure. Tremendous trials and tribulations await them, making them more vulnerable to deception and its attendant dangers. This sermon considers the importance of this foundational warning against deception as it seeks to discern, in the whole of the discourse, when and in what manner Christ will manifest His majesty.
