The Work of the Law

Paul is systematically unfolding the unrighteousness of man that all might see their personal need for a righteousness from God. The glory of the good news shines brightest against the gloom of the bad news. While the Jews have much advantage (3:1-2), in no way does this exempt them from God’s judgment against sin. Here, Paul advances his third major argument concerning the judgment of God, which he has presented as against all unrighteousness and impeccably impartial. Now we see more particularly that appealing to the Law of God entrusted to the Jews will avail no escape from justice. To the contrary, the work of the Law will ultimately serve only to condemn the guilty. This Paul shows in a brilliant progression with a surprising apex.
