Having summarized days of darkness, Jesus now answers the first of His disciples’ questions. He speaks prophetically, foretelling what will soon be fulfilled with frightening accuracy. They asked when the destruction of the temple would take place. Jesus’ answer is not a simple two-dimensional prediction. It proves to be a particularly relevant showcase of tribulation—a portrait and paradigm of culminating judgment. It is the icon of the days of darkness. But light, not darkness, punctuates His answer. The promise and certainty of Christ’s majestic presence assures us through the tribulating time of His absence. The certainty of His coming light keeps us in hope through days of darkness.
