The Satisfying Sovereign

Increasing Illumination

This passage records one of the most beloved events in our Lord’s ministry. Here, we encounter a miracle rather than a parable. Nevertheless, Jesus teaches. More than secrets of the kingdom, this passage reveals secrets of the King Himself. And it is presented in a stark contrast. Against the backdrop of a pseudo king obsessed with pride, power, and perversion, a brilliant and divine light shines in Jesus. He is the promised Christ, though humbly come as a crownless king. While the disciples are back on the stage, the spotlight focuses on Jesus. He is teaching them more intimately and intensely than ever before. But His subject matter is not civics, economics, or ethics. His tacit lesson is the nature and character of the King. What He reveals quite exceeds anticipation. Through one of the greatest miracles Jesus ever worked, He shows Himself to be the satisfying Sovereign. It is a scene abundant in Christological significance.
