Superior to Sabbath
Jesus has just called hearts that have been humbled to come to Him. He promises rest to those who rest in Him. And the whole figure of rest has deep theological connotations. Christ alone is the true Sabbath of the soul. Indeed, the Sabbath exists to make much of Christ—He is superior to the Sabbath. It is no coincidence that Christ’s invitation to come to Him for rest is followed by two sections of unbelief that specifically address the tragic misunderstanding of the purpose and fulfillment of the Sabbath. In this first section, an otherwise outrageous claim of supremacy is made by Jesus. He is Lord of all and therefore superior to the Sabbath.
