This sermon adopts this title, “The Golden Rule”, more for the sake of association than designation. To be sure, this verse is a winsome summary of our Lord’s teaching on righteous relationships. It issues a command of unsurpassed elegance and virtue. But Christ is no philosopher. He is not a sage dispensing proverbs. These words are more than an ethical maxim. Their power lies in their connectedness to the rest of Christ’s teaching, and much more to Christ Himself. These words glorify their Giver.
