Show Us Your Majesty

God-with-us leaves the temple. It is a culminating /ichabod/. Jerusalem is being left desolate—gloriless. The disciples are anxious and struggle to make sense of what is happening. Groping for expected glory, they call attention to the majesty they see—the temple edifice. As they point to its splendor, Jesus points to its destruction. So they run to questions. Their questions give rise to the most substantial prophetic revelation ever articulated by Jesus. In this sermon, Christ’s powerful and prophetic response, known as the Olivet Discourse, is introduced. Its foundation and framing are carefully considered, and its ultimate purpose proclaimed. Understanding biblical prophecy is important, but still more important is understanding its purpose. More than asking about signs and events, the disciples are asking Jesus when He will show them His majesty.
