Joshua is the first book of the former prophets, proclaiming the works of God through the history of the nation Israel. Joshua preaches history. It presses God upon its readers, revealing Him as holy, righteous, faithful, wrathful, and just. The book records the historical details that demonstrate God’s faithfulness to deliver according to His promises. While the historic conquest of the land of Canaan occupies most of the narrative, another resounding theme is the importance of obedience to the sacred Scriptures. A key principle that we can glean from this book is clear: true victory comes through faith in God and obedience to His Word, rather than through our own wisdom and strength.
