The longest prophetic book in sacred Scripture is marked by profound heaviness and hope. The book of Jeremiah records the calling, ministry, and reflections of the prophet Jeremiah. God sovereignly commissions him to write to reprove and rebuke Judah for her unfaithfulness to the Lord, her spiritual husband, and to call her to repentance. The book reveals God’s awesome judgment against covenant unfaithfulness and sin in general. It also emphasizes God’s renewing mercy through the righteous Messiah and the covenant He will establish, promising sin-forgiving mercy, new hearts, a new David, and a future restoration.
