Jesus has just silenced all His opponents. At each point this fateful week, He has proven that the leaders of Israel are not able to spiritually lead God’s people aright. His final counter of their attacks comes with the most profound argument for the mystery of the divine Messiah. Ironically, they will crucify Him because they—not He—blaspheme God. Appearances can deceive. In this transitional passage, we see a character collision come to a head. It is an exposé of Israel’s leaders and a display of Christ. Hearts are uncloaked. Masks are removed. Aims and ambitions are revealed. Presiding over all is Jesus—the Christ. He is exposing hypocrisy and proving His place.
