Paul now shifts focus. The gospel of the Holy Spirit is still beaming. And in the warmth of its light, attention is drawn to the distinguishing mark of living by the life of the Spirit. Paul moves from reception to response. All who are Christ’s are to live as Christ’s. Paul has already insisted that a true Christian does not live according to the flesh (8:4, 5, 6), but rather his mind is set on the things of the Spirit (8:5, 6). Here he sounds a new note: obligation. Eternal life is a gift. Yet living that life requires a putting to death the deeds of the body. Yet even here, more good news is given. For even this obligation comes with the Spirit’s leading.
