Will God Indeed Dwell on the Earth?
On the day the temple was completed, King Solomon stood back, thanked God for his goodness, and asked Him to fulfill His promise to preserve David’s throne. Solomon also posed a difficult question: Is it even possible for the infinite God to dwell on the earth, in a temple? In this dedicatory prayer, Solomon testified implicitly to the inadequacy of both the temple and the Old Covenant system. Amazingly, the Old Testament prophets promise that God will come to his people, that Israel’s true king will reign on David’s throne forever, and that full atonement for sin might be provided through the sacrificial death of a suffering servant. Jesus Christ, whose incarnation and birth we celebrate this season, is Israel’s God, her rightful Davidic King, and her suffering Savior.
