God the Son Disclosed in Darkness
Jesus is executed. The scene is dense and dark. Yet it constitutes the central apex of the ages. Here the most important event in redemptive history is sketched, though its meaning remains inexhaustible. In it we are met with “the scandal” of the gospel. Shall shame bring glory? Shall the Messiah be accursed? Shall God be crucified? Surely this seems to be only madness and folly. Yet in reality it is the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:21-24). The value of this death hinges on the identity and nature of the Man being crucified. Here, in deepest darkness, we see most clearly. At the cross we see the crown. In the darkness we see deity. The Man being crucified is publicly attested the Son of God. The implications are colossal.
