2 Kings

Light for Life: Exploring God-breathed Glory

The book of Kings purposefully contains much more than merely the chronicles of kings and kingdoms. It retells Israel’s history through a theological lens. Its inspired record recounts Israel’s tragic decline from a united kingdom to a divided kingdom, from the centrality of God represented in His temple to scattered apostasy and idolatry throughout the land. 2 Kings highlights both the judgment and the mercy of God in dealing with the kingdoms of Judah and Israel, showing the evil of idolatry and apostacy and their devastating consequences, and showing the faithfulness of God to His promise to preserve King David’s line for the coming of a future and greater King.
