Light for Life: Exploring God-breathed Glory

The Hebrew Scriptures end with what Jerome called “the chronicle of the whole sacred history.” It is a highly selective account that spans the ages from the first man to the last king in Israel. Though the history is vast, a disproportionate emphasis is placed on David and his line to encourage the remnant of Israel returning from exile. It serves to remind them that the covenant heritage of their past is the basis of hope for their future, that blessing will come through the Davidic Covenant in and through a “Son of David” yet to come, that God’s faithfulness will overcome their faithlessness, and that right worship and spiritual reform is vital for God’s people. 1 and 2 Chronicles serve to stimulate hope and holiness in God’s people with energetic anticipation for Christ and His reign by emphasizing God’s electing grace, sovereignty, and faithfulness to His covenant promises.
