Ezra

Light for Life: Exploring God-breathed Glory

The Book of Ezra puts on display the demonstration of God’s gracious lovingkindness through His faithfulness to His promises (Ezra 3:11). The text focuses specifically on a remnant population of Jews who return from Babylonian captivity by the decree of King Cyrus of Persia (Ezra 1:1).  The contextual setting for the book therefore relies upon existing knowledge of Israel’s rebellion and sinful disobedience. It presents a high view of God and His word, while the themes of sin, consequence, confession, repentance, holiness, purity, commitment, devotion, and prayer are observed.  It resounds with theme of restoration. God is faithful, even through unsuspecting means. God is great, even through unsuspecting powers. The Book of Ezra demonstrates God’s faithfulness and exposes Israel’s faithlessness to God’s Word. It is purposed to stimulate preparation for God’s kingdom by a sense of hope in God and His promises, especially through the line of David.
