Nehemiah

The history of the Old Covenant as recorded in sacred Scripture finds its final story in the Book of Nehemiah. It is a book that features a remarkable series of events, testifying to a great and gracious God. Nehemiah is the key character, though he is not a prophet, priest, or king. A wonderful harmony of God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility is modeled throughout the book and especially featured in Nehemiah’s prayers and actions. Torah is a central theme and primary to the spiritual restoration of the covenant people of God. So the last inspired piece of Israel’s history emphatically points back to her beginning with an emphasis on and renewal of the Mosaic Covenant. Like Ezra, it looks for God’s kingdom with anticipation for God’s king. This book punctuates Israel’s history with God’s faithfulness despite her sin, God’s promises, and God’s sovereign power, all with anticipation for what God will do next through the line of David.
