Ecclesiastes

Ecclesiastes is a book that addresses some of life’s most challenging questions. The world is broken and crooked. The image of God now lives outside of Eden. Because of sin, life can be frustrating, perplexing, and vexing. Moreover, we are prone to pursue emptiness. Solomon, the wisest, richest, and most sensual king in Israel's history looks at life—fallen, under sin, and cursed—from a purely human perspective apart from God and declares it to be futile, vain, and empty. This important work of wisdom proclaims that the best of earthly experiences, philosophy, wealth, and success result only in emptiness if they are ends in themselves. It shows that satisfaction cannot be found in life under sin. And it calls all to fear and trust God in and through all of life. The substance of life is found only in God—apart from Him all is vanity.
