Wives be Submissive - Husbands be Understanding
Thus far in Peter’s epistle to exiled, persecuted Christians, he has reassured them of the joy of their salvation, reminded they were saved to be holy, called to brotherly love, to desire the Word, and to be living stones built up as a spiritual house. He then turned to their privilege of glorifying God in a hostile world, the Christian’s responsibility to submit to civil and workplace authority, and displayed Jesus as our example of patient suffering. He now speaks to wives’ submission and husbands’ understanding as necessary to their respective roles in Christian marriage.
