Hope Is Born
The sermon seeks to highlight Matthew’s intent to close the narrative of Christ’s birth with an emphasis on hope. The threefold insistence placed on Christ’s fulfillment of otherwise unanticipated Scriptural references illustrates contextually an emphasis on hope. As the text continues to present Jesus as the long hoped-for Messiah-King, attention is now directed to hope that stands in the face of great tragedy and evil. Indeed, our Lord is quite the unexpected Christ—completely uninvented by man and shockingly glorious.
